Long-Term Running Goals:

I love training with others both on road and trail. I also find benefits of running solo when I need to focus and regroup.

Fun fact: Although I prefer to run outside, I don't mind the treadmill for pace accountability and for the blind assumption that I can run really fast. I have a lot of secret treadmill PR's at 0% incline:)

Timp, again. This time in the night with 30+ other weirdos. Tripped and fell so hard on both knees. Limp up to the top, hobble on the way down. TIME TO TAPER FOR REALS THIS TIME! Plus, I was kinda in a bratty mood.

Mile two brought heavy breathing, burning calves and a hand full of doubts. Mile three brought a blister...already. This was setting up to be a very rough race today. I felt tired and dead. I could tell that the others had a lot of pep in their step. They were laughing, and even possibly enjoying themselves! It was dark and my phone light was the only thing keeping me from tripping over exposed roots and rocks. I wasn't sure about this. Who on earth thought running two consecutive marathons up mountains was a good idea? I still feel like I don't get the marathon and somehow I thought I would just give this distance a whirl?  It brought me back to my days as a child, climbing the ascent of a roller coaster and waiting to get off, but knowing it was going down no matter how much I whined or cried. I was in this. The doubts were steadily creeping and I had no clue what the outcome would be today- in fact, at that point I wondered if I was even going to finish the race ~12 hours later. However, I did know that I had trained hard and I had experienced friends who mentored me along the way. I finally thought to myself, "well, they said I could do it, so lets find out," And with that, I trudged behind, huffing and puffing as I always do.

The first 5 miles was a hard bushwhacking climb up to James Peak. The downhill was super technical with slippery rocks. I started to feel really good around mile 10 but my left knee was feeling quite painful from a fall I had last week up Timp. It never slowed me down, but I felt it for the rest of the race and tried to send good vibes to my knee. As the course smoothed out a bit, I was surprised to find that my energy increased each mile from there on out, although that may not be accurate, it just seemed as though I felt more driven with each step closer to the end.

Miles 10-20 were nice and easy and I kept a steady pace with my friend Scott at this point. We found ourselves running under 8:00 min miles, but then would try to slow down the pace. I'm so grateful he encouraged me to slow down here! We started climbing again and the temps were too. Mile 23 or so, we learned that we were in 5th and 6th overall due to a few going off course. We saw Jennilyn and Chelsea here who were so helpful aiding us and getting us on our way. Around mile 24 Scott got sick and encouraged me to go ahead. I was scared to go alone, but decided to be tough and just do it. I was leading the women at that point, but the second place girl was only two or less mins behind. She looked strong and focused, so I pushed hard from that moment on and never looked back or let up. I didn't care if she or anyone else passed me, I was just going to go as hard as I could for those last 25+ miles. I ran every thing that was even remotely runnable, and hiked if I had to. Otherwise, I pushed it! I found the pink markers and each of the stations of which I checked in. I prayed many times along the way that I wouldn't get lost and then would soon thereafter find a pink flag making the way. Lots of good experiences out there alone. I felt good the entire time, but had to play a lot of mind games to stay focused for the last 5 or so hours by myself. I found myself worrying about the others and wondering if they were also tripping on the same spots I was:)

My legs burned like crazy coming down of Ben Lomond Peak around miles 30-38! I couldn't wait for the next climb at this point to give my legs some respite. Then it got really hot and windy. I had to chase my hat off the course a few times and figure my hair out (did I mention that my hair thing broke at mile 10!). That was a nightmare and I looked ridiculous trying to keep my layers in my hat that didn't want to stay on my head.

The climb from 38-40 was just brutal and the footing was difficult. Somehow I passed a couple of  guys here (maybe one was a pacer in hindsight). I was in 4th overall until DJ passed me around mile 45-47. He was cruising (and had just ran extra miles). At that point I was 5th overall and learned that I was around an hour ahead of the second place woman! I had no idea I had made that kind of gap and it encouraged me to keep going hard. I wondered if I could go under 10 hours, but since my Garmin died, I couldn't do the math accurately and had no clue what pace I was really going. Thankfully, Chelsea gave me her Garmin to use for the last section of the race and gave me some much needed caffeine beans!)  I never really knew what mile I was on, so I just kept my focus on pushing hard and creating a bigger gap, and trying hard to keep each mile under 10 mins, not sure if I did though.

The last aid station at Wind Surfer Beach was hilarious. I had ran out of water 40 mins prior, and the volunteers were concerned with my state (even though I did feel good, considering.) They baptized me by ice water, dumping cups over my head without notice (Ahhhh! thank you?!) but I loved their help. I loved seeing Ashley and her family there cheering me on! It was hard to get going for the last 4 miles after that, and I went off course just a little but turned around after turning on my phone to navigate back on course. I came in strong and felt amazing! I loved having my family there cheering me on. They are the reason I get to train everyday. Loved this race, and I even love trail running as much as I love the road. Never thought I would say that:)

First female with the CR, and placed 5th overall. 11,740 vertical climb and lots of technical, non-running terrain. I did what I could, now I'm wondering if I can do better. What a challenge this race was for me. I loved it.
