Long-Term Running Goals:

I love training with others both on road and trail. I also find benefits of running solo when I need to focus and regroup.

Fun fact: Although I prefer to run outside, I don't mind the treadmill for pace accountability and for the blind assumption that I can run really fast. I have a lot of secret treadmill PR's at 0% incline:)

Easy run on Bountiful Blvd with lots of ladies. I was intrested to see how my knee felt today. Felt fine, but is tingling throughout the day. Fine with that. I am starting to get excited for Ogden. I'm feeling primed and pumped. I'm not quite sure how to run this week. When am I supposed to peak in my training? I'm not tapering until 10 days prior, should I just keep building up in mileage and workouts until then?? 50 miles last week, should I go for 55 this week? I really don't know. It seems when it gets down to it, all the things you thought you knew, you doubt you know anymore!

No idea. I never run with a plan. I plan on tapering at 10 days too. I dont know if i am racing ogden or uv yet since i m running the slam. I do not feel ready after how crappy i felt at saturdays race. Have u ever ran a race that from the warmul on things just didnt feel good? Man alive if that halpens at ogden i am sticking with the 315 to 330 pacer. Glad u r pumped. :)

i usually hit peak mileage two weeks out (three saturdays before the race), then race a 5k the week before. just follow what your body is telling you. don't force it, but don't hold back either (at least until the taper, then you MUST hold back!)

flashlight = torch

skipping rocks = skimming stones

scissors = sizzahs

two weeks out: i usually drop the mileage by about 20-25% of my peak mileage, and about 10-15% of my average mileage for the training cycle.

race week: mileage is reduced by 60-65% (that does not include the miles in the actual race).

hi. another comment.

keep in mind this is just what i do, and i don't always train optimally.

pay a visit to bonnie's blog to see how it's really done.

From Bonnie on Wed, May 01, 2013 at 08:54:39 from 64.119.33.134

My schedule is similar to allie -- my "worst" week is usually 3 weeks out. 3 workouts, my mileage is the highest during this week. Greg has us doing 2 workouts at MP, plus some (8-10 x 800, fartlek: 15 -20 x 1` on 1` off, 20 miles with the last 8 at MP). My legs are usually trashed during this week. So it is sort of a relief to start backing off the next week.

The next two weeks (even the week of the race), we keep the same schedule (2 workouts/week) - but at about 60-70% reduction in volume.

The last week still has 2 workouts (much shorter) with nearly 40-50% reduction in volume.

Personally, I like this method, because rather than throwing your body in the unnatural training-to-zero state -- it sticks to your typical "routine" - but at far less volume.

allies race approach is awesome. I don't usually do this (because I am a scaredy cat!), but there are so many really good runners that follow this approach - and it really works for them. And for you speedsters - a 5K will be "easy" to recover from - and really good to keep your legs fresh.

I can't wait to cheer you on!!! GOOOOO KARA!!!

Julie- You are an animal. You really are! I looked at the pacers for Ogden night, the first pacer starts at 3:30. No help there. I was really hoping for a faster pacer since I've never ran with one. I think it would be helpful.

Allie- Thank you for the feedback. I was hoping you would see this post. So three saturdays before you are hitting your peak mileage (this week for me) or was that last week?

From allie on Wed, May 01, 2013 at 11:05:52 from 161.38.221.168

it would be this week.

just listen to mom.

Hey! I included Bonnie in my last comment, but it never showed up?? What the. That's okay, I remember what I said.

BONNIE AKA World Class "mom"- Thank you for your feedback. I have tried to follow Greg's plan, so this is further insight I can use! Also, please don't ever stop calling me Kara. It is a term of endearment I value greatly.:)

From Tara on Wed, May 01, 2013 at 11:20:55 from 75.169.140.253

Mom- Thanks for clarifying. Now we just have MOM to sort out before Ogden. So, are you mom, is Bonnie mom, am I mom, or are we talking about my mom, or yours? Bonnie's mom?

From allie on Wed, May 01, 2013 at 11:24:45 from 161.38.221.168

maybe mom is the blog? (mum for james)

From Tara on Wed, May 01, 2013 at 11:32:54 from 75.169.140.253

It's now clear to me that Sasha is mom. James is mum. Glad to have that finally sorted out.

From Bonnie on Wed, May 01, 2013 at 12:04:39 from 74.202.188.254

hmmm, I thought MOM meant "Momentarily Out Marathoning" ... or maybe "Mistakenly Outlandish Miscreant", "Motivationally Outdated Misguider"

In which case, neither Sasha, nor James, would fit the last two categories :)

"Most Uniformally Mathematician" might actually be the best MUM for James?

From allie on Wed, May 01, 2013 at 12:24:18 from 161.38.221.168

"motivationally outlandish misguider"

hahahahaha!

From allie on Wed, May 01, 2013 at 12:48:51 from 161.38.221.168

*outdated. :)

and that's how you fail at using quotation marks.

I'm late to this party. You should do 20ish miles this saturday, 8-11 next weekend, and then go kill the marathon.
