Long-Term Running Goals:

I love training with others both on road and trail. I also find benefits of running solo when I need to focus and regroup.

Fun fact: Although I prefer to run outside, I don't mind the treadmill for pace accountability and for the blind assumption that I can run really fast. I have a lot of secret treadmill PR's at 0% incline:)

6:00AM- Tempo Tuesday with Andy at LPT. Today seemed to be a stark difference for cooler temps and  the amount of light. Maybe it's because we skipped last week. Kam took today off since he's tapering for Huntsville this Saturday.

We ran 4 miles out for a warmup, then turned around for a 10k at mp. I had a break after the first mile for a quick visit to the  POP. Resumed the effort until we had reached the 10k mark. My Garmin was off from both the mile markers and Andy's chronos watch. Plus we went through a tunnel that caused it to loose the signal- but that always happens, so we went with Andy's watch which seemed to be more consistent.

10k splits (40:20) - 6:39, 6:29, 6:34, 6:36, 6:35, 6:26, 6:24 (.2).

The plan was to stay between 6:40-6:45. The dark made it hard to slow down. I kept reminding myself to ease off the pace to get into a natural mp, but I kept naturally returning to 6:30's. The last mile I really made an effort to slow down, but I guess it was only mentally, because it ended up being the fastest. My pace odometer was off today. I think it was the 5 hour energy I tried out before the workout. I'm wondering if I should give it a try for the marathon, maybe at the half way point. I haven't had any stomach issues since taking it, aside from when my dog jumped up and punched me in the stomach when I got home, but that can't be attributed to anything. Any 5 hour energy lovers out there?

Overall, I felt controlled and really good. I just wish I could sustain that effort for an entire marathon!

Great workout Tara! It is definitely a good sign when you are comfortably 10 seconds faster than your goal pace.

From Andy on Tue, Sep 24, 2013 at 11:05:41 from 199.190.170.29

I could tell you were feeling it today so I didn't want to force you to slow down even though I thought I was going to die. Running at the desired effort was more important than the numbers on the watch and an arbitrary pace goal.

I tried 5 hour energy once during a 100. It tasted like poop on toast. Ick! I didn't notice anything negative, but I really didn't notice an energy boost either. I prefer Coke and Mt. Dew. Try drinking that during a marathon. :)

From AngieB on Tue, Sep 24, 2013 at 12:04:52 from 174.239.66.1

I haven't tried out 5 hr energy either but know alot of people do it in marathons and I'm curious as well about trying it but worried all that caffeine will make my heart explode while running or have jitters.

From Kam on Tue, Sep 24, 2013 at 12:52:02 from 68.66.163.179

I take one around mile 14. Last year I chased it with another at mile 20. It may have been too much too soon. I'll try half at 20 and the rest at 23 this year.

I think the jolt can help with mental sharpness, which starts to lag in the late stages of the marathon. Many articles confirm that caffeine is a performance enhancer. I think your experience today points you in that direction. Many of the gels you use anyway are loaded up with caffeine; 5-hour just gets you the caffeine effect without the corn syrup.

Nice tempo! Close to 40 on a flat course is impressive. We'll have to revisit that workout in early November, and all get honest sub-40 10ks.

Where's Sasha when you need him? He really needs to tighten the filters to protect us from Burt.

Andrea- Thanks! I'm feeling more and more confident as it gets closer!

Andy- I basically cheated, so yeah, it would make sense I felt good.

Allie- Register that baby right away. Party hat?

From Tara on Tue, Sep 24, 2013 at 17:44:48 from 75.169.139.89

Angie- I tried some Asian energy drink with green tea. No problems with either, I just haven't raced with one yet. Too scared. Good luck on Saturday! I'll be there cheering!

Scott- I didn't notice an onset boost, but I do think it was there. Usually morning tempos are more taxing, it seems. Poop and toast? I think it tastes more like acid, but so does pop to me. I'll try Mt. Dew though if you say so!

Kam- What do you think are the benefits of taking some at one point, then the rest later? You're ready to rock and roll!

I love 5 hour energy I take it half way and notice a huge difference. It hard to drink while running though and it defiantly needs some water after.

Never have taken a five hour and do not use gus with caffeine..so my subthree someday over forty is gonna be sans caffeine baby! Like angie i m sure my heart would explode..used one accidentally a caff gu at sg two years ago and i was going uo hill when my heartrate soared over 200 never recovered and flipped out at mile 19. However for tbose of u who benefit may the odds be in your favor :-) my running partner tbis am felt the effects of hed caffeine gu as she pulled away from me the last 1.5 miles. Al my running partners use five hour energies and all have run subthrees...but all are also under forty years of age. Seriously where is sasha on this subject alone (nevermind barts implications ;-))

From JulieC on Sat, Sep 28, 2013 at 18:06:42 from 63.224.119.191

I m thinking...let me know allie...that allie does not take five hour energies.

From allie on Sat, Sep 28, 2013 at 18:15:59 from 97.126.211.171

i have never tried it.
