Long-Term Running Goals:

I love training with others both on road and trail. I also find benefits of running solo when I need to focus and regroup.

Fun fact: Although I prefer to run outside, I don't mind the treadmill for pace accountability and for the blind assumption that I can run really fast. I have a lot of secret treadmill PR's at 0% incline:)

Motivation is slipping lately for many reasons, hopefully it's a phase. RSV has gone wild at my home and while I have not been infected, the sleepless nights with the kids are wearing me thin. Looking around my house looks like something out of a horror film. The shades are closed and bodies are laying all over the house looking lifeless with bouts of coughing fits. At any point you'll hear weak voices calling, "mmmmmmooooooooooommmmmm" and then nothing. It's driving me crazy. It's all I can do to not scavenge through our emergency supplies, grab a mask and incubate myself in a room with towels stuffed under the door threshold.

Maybe a break after the series for a while from racing would be good. I'll likely get out of the rut in a week or so.

5 miles @ 7:30

This post would make another good poem...

My motiviation is slipping, my weekly mileage is dipping.

Sleepless nights have got me bad, with little zombies not calling for dad.

Thy're here and there, their everywhere! From the couch to the floor, I'd like to push them out the door.

In my sleep I dream of  running, but suddenly awake to see them coming!

"I'm sick!" one said, and then they hog the bed!

There's feet in my face, punches to the gut. Can you see why I'm in a rut? I'm turning into a nut!

Mmmmmmmoooooooommmmmm...I hear them cry. I think I might die!

I run to my room to take a break, but I hear them coming, it's more than I can take!

My door opens with phlegm to the face! "Can't they cover their mouths!?" I rather be hit with mace.

So I go for a run, just 5 miles - I feel like a bum. But it's all I can take to get a little break!

In the short time it's taken to write this post, I can't count out who's thrown up the most! Into the bath while I do a little math. They're ALL spilling their guts as they sit on their butts:)

It's going to be fine, I'll clean them up because they're mine. For tomorrow will be okay- it's the start of a brand new day.

Be glad you're not me today. Happy running. I love my poems.

i love your poems, too. nice job -- with the poem writing, the running, the juggling of sick kids, etc. etc. i hope your kids get to feeling better soon.

i go through motivational ups and downs all the time. i think you are right that a bit of down time after the series will give you a refreshing outlook on training for the rest of the summer. it's important to take a break from intense training every now and then. just enjoy coasting for awhile -- that's what i'm doing right now and it's great!

i signed up for the half yesterday. still not sure i will end up at the starting line, but it's one step closer.

From Tara on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 16:18:10 from 75.169.140.216

Allie- you might as well do it and if you're not feeling it do it anyway for a workout. Why not? Well actually you did give some very good reason due to your misfortune last time. A lot of us will be there so should be fun. I've put a lot pressure to make some time up on this half and it has made running not fun at all. I changed my thinking to 1-3 rd place- it doesn't really matter. It made my 5 miles more doable:) what did you think of the course? Details please!

From Burt on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 16:37:06 from 72.223.93.158

That poem brought a thousand tears to my eyes.

From allie on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 16:59:29 from 161.38.218.168

on a good-weathered day, the course is great. but i have never run this race in good weather :) (huntsville is a cold/wind trap)

have you run the ogden marathon? of so, a lot of this course will be familiar. if not, it's very similar to the first half of ogden, and i'm sure you've only heard good things about that race, right?

stats according to the course tool: elevation gain of 148.57 ft; elevation loss of 461.22 ft; net elevation loss of 312.64 ft.

if you take your target flat pace for the race, this is how the miles will breakdown according to that target pace: mile 1 is about 7 slow (starts with a very gradual uphill, but nothing scary); mile 2 is 11 seconds fast, miles 3 and 4 are 12 seconds fast, mile 5 is 13 seconds fast, mile 6 is 10 seconds fast, mile 7 is 6 seconds fast, mile 8 is completely flat, mile 9 is 1 second slow, miles 10 and 11 are 2 seconds slow, mile 12 is 3 seconds slow, mile 13 is 7 seconds slow.

so you basically have a nice, gradual downhill up through mile 8 (but nothing too crazy). then miles 9 - finish are slightly uphill, but it's not too noticeable at all. the road appears to be mostly flat, but your legs will feel it at that stage in the race. i've always approached this race conservatively at the beginning to save a bit for the later miles. however, i haven't run this since 2009 and i am a different runner now than i was then, so i really don't know what the best strategy is.

anyway, analyzing the course has me all excited to run this now. i will do my very best to leave the bad weather curse at home.

also, remember the difference between good pressure and bad pressure. good pressure pumps up the adrenaline and gets you excited about the race, bad pressure wears on you mentally and zaps your energy and motivation. no bad pressure! you are in a good spot right now in the series and you've had some very solid races so far this year. regardless of where you end up placing in the series, just remember to be proud of yourself for all the successes you've had so early in the season. more great things ahead!

have i reached the character limit yet? shall i keep writing?

From allie on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 17:00:10 from 161.38.218.168

burt. little old lady. i grant you two comments to make fun of my long-winded post.

From allie on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 17:03:07 from 161.38.218.168

one more thing: i've saved the route on the course tool page if you want to plug in your goal time or target pace and get a more detailed breakdown of your splits.

From allie on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 17:03:38 from 161.38.218.168

also, i just ate a banana.

From Burt on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 17:09:14 from 72.223.93.158

IT'S PAINFUL!

From Tara on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 17:09:59 from 75.169.140.216

Also I'm in a bath and my kids are all watching. This day gets better and better. Time to zap the neg energy right now. I might open my front door too. That will be positive.

Also I've never used the course tool, never have really understood it. I must look again.

From Tara on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 17:13:12 from 75.169.140.216

Thought you should know Allie- one kid just threw yogurt in the tub out of frustration because I wouldn't open it. I wish he threw a banana instead. I'll keep you posted and you do the same.

From allie on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 17:16:12 from 161.38.218.168

be sure to eat the yogurt. it builds muscle. dip a banana in it for extra energy. also, it's pretty breezy out today -- if you open the front door you won't even need a towel to dry off. burt -- have i crossed the line yet?

From Burt on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 17:19:02 from 72.223.93.158

I'm just wondering how she's blogging while in the bath tub.

From Tara on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 17:24:51 from 75.169.140.216

In a bath with food, I ain't no dude. An audience with kids and online. I think it's time to dine! Bananas and yogurt, I have my pick- too bad I'm feeling a little sick. Stay positive I'm told, I hope I can be bold. Allie loves this post and burt too, I'll never stop poetry, it's all so new!

There is lots more where that came from.

From Tara on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 17:25:52 from 75.169.140.216

Burt don't think about it. Thanks.

From Burt on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 17:31:21 from 72.223.93.158

Don't worry. I'm singing a thousand primary songs.

This is more than a human should have to bear...so many comments from Burt. (hahaha, Burt)

I must respectfully disagree with allie's description of the course. Even though the GIS would indicate the first 8 miles are downhill, experience proves that the downhill ends after 5 miles. You are then subjected to rollers for the rest of the course. You could probably run a PR 10k at the beginning of the race, but you'd be hard pressed to continue like that for the rest.

A blessing upon your sick house. Feel better soon, summers children.

From Tara on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 22:04:38 from 75.169.140.216

Sorry for the TMI Kam.

Yeah, according to the results it looks like there are some challenges on the course, but overall looks not too bad. Gonna have to use the course tool. Thanks Allie.

I hope you've taken a break this week Tara. You could probably use one.
