Long-Term Running Goals:

I love training with others both on road and trail. I also find benefits of running solo when I need to focus and regroup.

Fun fact: Although I prefer to run outside, I don't mind the treadmill for pace accountability and for the blind assumption that I can run really fast. I have a lot of secret treadmill PR's at 0% incline:)

Progressive race pace workout

2mi wu

Progressive-ish 10k @ 6:49, 6:30, 6:15, 5:49, 6:49, 6:30, 5:00 (.2)

 1 mile cd

I wanted to touch on each race pace today and work my way down every mile (mp, hmp, 10k, 5k). I added on .10 (5:00min/mi) to calculate the last 5k  @  19:04.

I stepped off for about 1 min to peel off a layer and take a sip of drink. I decided to keep going because I felt good. I also wanted to see how easy returning to mp would feel . After a mile I felt relaxed, so I decided to drop down again to hmp for another mile. I was tempted to just do the whole workout another time around since I was half way through, but decided not to over do it since I'm racing a 10k on Thursday.  Decided to make it a 10k by adding another .10 (5:00) for 40:00.

I've been monitoring my sleep and HR lately. My resting HR has hung around 43 in the mornings. I caught up on some major sleep yesterday after not feeling too well, so that made a big difference today.

As I showered I started to think of a new mantra. I always try to have one going into each season. I came up with ..."Sleep well, fuel strong, run fastĀ®" New blog title, right there. I'm going to register it before someone steals it;) I even have a screen printer. Shirts are coming, maybe my own singlet... someone's proud of herself.

Hmmmm...I think the middle part needs help. Fuel strong? What does that even mean. I hate to be a buzz kill. I mean, I love to be a buzz kill.

How did you find time to run 9 miles with all the swimming today?

From Tara on Mon, Jul 01, 2013 at 15:29:44 from 75.169.143.44

Burt- Try fueling strong, then get back to me. I'll do the same, I haven't done it yet:)

Well, if it needs explaining then that's not good! I guess as long as it makes sense to me, then it's okay, right? Do I really have to explain it? Maybe I should. FUEL WITH FOODS THAT MAKE YOU STRONG. That would just be silly to put that in the mantra. Don't you think?

Rest well, fuel with foods that make you strong, run fast. Too wordy. I should have gone with "Go, you chicken fat, go." That one clearly motivates.

Swimming followed by 9 miles thereafter. Maybe I just made up the 9 miles, or dreamed about it. What a good dream:)

Nice progressive run today! Do you find that your treadmill runs equate pretty well to your outside paces?

I like the new mantra!!

From Burt on Mon, Jul 01, 2013 at 15:59:11 from 71.216.109.214

Andrea just likes it because she's a girl, and girls always take each other's sides. How about Live Strong? How about Fuel adequately? Fuel belt? Fuel economy? Economize your fuel? Eco-friendly fuel? Strong is the new skinny? Skinny jeans? Billy Jean is not my lover? Show 'em hot funky?

Andrea, as far as speed work goes, I say no... but I wish:) Although I prefer the road for all runs, the effort is harder from wind, grade etc, as you know.

Also, there is not a belt propelling you forward! Clearly TM runs are aided in that regard. My 5k was evident of that on Saturday:)However, that being said, I think I am capable of running the same times in a race. Hopefully better next time.

Some people disagree and feel 10mph on the TM is sprinting and road work is easier. I guess it's who you ask. What do you think?

The TM clearly has its drawbacks too. Boring with little motivation or scenery. I think it takes a lot more focus to stay tuned into the speed, just for the fact it can be so tempting to end prematurely when tired. On the road, you still have to run home, so ending doesn't give you immediate satisfaction.

Thanks for making me feel cool as I reiterated stuff you already know! At least you now know my PERSONAL standpoint.

So good to see your smiling face and positive outlook on Saturday:)- Team Andrea.

Burt- You are both clever and originalĀ®. That one's on me.

From Andrea on Mon, Jul 01, 2013 at 16:22:43 from 72.37.171.52

Well, I really feel like it's different for each person. Theoretically, it should be much easier on a treadmill for the reasons you said. And the faster you go on the treadmill, the easier the treadmill is.

But for me, the effort on a treadmill is a lot greater (mostly because I am mentally weak and hate boredom). It also causes me to overstride and tear muscles like my abdomen :) But I think for people that run on it for most of their runs, it is a lot easier on the treadmill.

So what pace are you targeting for Thursday?
